Wireless

Wireless Internet is becoming increasingly popular, so you can take your laptop or other devices to many different types of places and get an Internet connection. When your device is able to connect to the Internet it is said that you are in proximity of an access point. There are some places that are covered by more than one access point and these types of places are called hotspots. Hotspots can be as little as a single room or as big as several square miles.

There are some advantages to wireless Internet, some of which are listed next. Wireless Internet is good for places that want to reduce costs by not having to rewire or lay cables like outdoor places and historical buildings. There are now many different types of devices that use wireless Internet, and prices for the devices and the service are both coming down. Wireless networks now support roaming so you can now take your device from one access point to another without having to worry. Wireless networks have a global set of standards, so it does not matter where you are in the world your wireless Internet should work everywhere as long as you are located in a wireless network when trying to get on the Internet.

There are some disadvantages to wireless Internet also and some are listed next. There are some devices like microwave ovens and cordless phones that can interrupt wireless networks. Battery life and heat are still a concern when using wireless Internet because the power consumption is still fairly high. Even when correctly configured the most common wireless encryption standard Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is still breakable. There are some issues between different kinds of brands and deviations from the standard that can interrupt connections and lower speeds on other people’s devices using the same wireless network. When there is no encryption used people can monitor and use wireless networks to read and copy data, even personal information that is transmitted over the wireless network. You need to be careful of this because your identity can easily be stolen if you are not cautious of what information you use on the Internet.
